Tooth whitening products and processes are now commonplace around the world. The majority of tooth whiteners on the market today are hydrogen or carbomide perioxide based. However, along with this popular procedure are a number of potential difficulties and negative side effects:

• Teeth are often sensitized and painful during and after they are whitened.
  • All peroxide bleaching causes some degree of tooth sensitivity. This is sensitivity to cold and/or hot fluids and even air can cause discomfort. This is normal and an expected side effect.
• Without a careful and lengthy pre-procedure by the dentist, gums will often be burned by exposure to home remedy peroxide bleach tooth whitener products.
  • Most dentist office bleaching procedures apply a basic protective layer that is painted on the gums and papilla (the tips of the gums between the teeth) in order to reduce the chemical burns to the soft tissues. The bleaching agent is either carbamide peroxide, which breaks down in the mouth to form hydrogen peroxide, or hydrogen peroxide itself. The bleaching gel typically contains between 10-30% carbamide peroxide (15% is recommended) which is roughly equivalent to 3-10% hydrogen peroxide concentration.
• Hydrogen peroxide attacks and removes tooth enamel... including peroxide strips.
  • The safety of tooth bleaching, which is based upon hydrogen peroxide (HP) as the active agent, has been questioned. HP above 0.01% is banned in Europe, due to its harmful effects. HP treatment provides direct evidence that it has the ability to penetrate enamel. It can be concluded, therefore, that the 30% HP may have adverse effects on the mineral and the organic matter of human tooth enamel.
• There is often a disappointing "bounce back" in the tooth whitening effect a few weeks after the bleaching process.
  • Hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide products reduce the hardness of the enamel as well as what is called the elastic modulus or stiffness, a measure of the ability of the tooth surface to "bounce back" in response to applied force. Research has shown that teeth typically can restore their previous hardness after losing small amounts of enamel calcification.
  • Enamel is the hardest structure in the human body. It protects teeth and maintains the integrity of the bite. But enamel is subject to abrasion by certain products and even too-vigorous brushing, which is why it is important to figure out ways to reduce damage to this part of the tooth.
