Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues that support your teeth. There is a shallow v-shaped crevice called a sulcus between the tooth and gums. Periodontal disease attacks just below the gum line where the attachment of the tooth and it’s supporting tissue break down.
Periodontal diseases are classified according to the severity of the disease. The two major stages are gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is a milder and reversible form of periodontal disease that only affects the gums. Gingivitis may lead to more serious, destructive forms of periodontal disease called periodontitis.
Non-Surgical Periodontal and Gum Disease Treatments
Gum disease treatment guidelines stress that periodontal health should be achieved in the least invasive and most cost-effective manner. This is often accomplished through non-surgical periodontal treatment by the dentist, including scaling and root planing, a careful cleaning of the root surfaces to remove plaque and calculus [tartar] from deep periodontal pockets and to smooth the tooth root to remove bacterial toxins. These procedures are often followed by antimicrobial therapy. Penetrator™ Chlorine Dioxide Oral Analgesic Gel may be included in the periodontal Treatment. With use of this product, Symptoms can start to disappear in as little as one week after periodontitis treatment begins.
