The direct cause of periodontitis most often starts with gingivitis which always begins with plaque. This colorless, soft and sticky film is composed of bacteria that form constantly on the teeth and gums. Further, plaque forms on your teeth when starches and sugars in food interact with bacteria normally found in your mouth. Lack of proper oral care leads to periodontal disease, in fact, eight out of ten people suffer from periodontitis, some without even knowing they have the problem.

What is Periodontitis?

If not corrected, gingivitis can progress into periodontitis. Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums. At this stage of periodontal disease, even vigorous tooth brushing may not control the disease because of calculus accumulated around the teeth and the infection around the gum line. Periodontitis destroys the soft tissue and eventually the bone that supports your teeth. Periodontitis can cause tooth loss or worse, an increased risk of heart attack or stroke and other serious health problems.

In the earlier stages of periodontitis disease, most of the treatment involves root planing and curettage (cleaning) under the gums. It involves the removal of plaque and inflamed soft tissue in the pockets around the tooth. Its purpose is to remove the bacterial colonies and the mechanical and chemical irritants that cause inflammation. The goal is for the gum to reattach itself to the tooth or shrink enough to eliminate the pocket.

Peridontitis Disease Prevention

Proper oral hygiene starts with the most effective non-prescription tool - the toothbrush. Because a toothbrush's ability to remove plaque is markedly reduced by splayed or matted bristles, toothbrushes need to be replaced at the first sign of wear. Soft bristles are superior to hard for removing plaque, but the kind of brush you buy is less important than how well you use it.

Your dentist or dental hygienist can instruct you on the most effective methods of brushing and flossing. Proper brushing takes at least two minutes! Most adults do not come close to brushing that long. To properly brush your teeth, use short, gentle strokes, paying extra attention to the gum line, hard-to-reach back teeth and areas around fillings, crowns or other restoration.
